Journalism, it is often said, is the first rough draft of history; the first attempt to join up the dots of events and to sketch a coherent picture. It is also hot history, driven by experiences and emotions, gossip and inference, anger, fear and indignation. In the Bosnian crisis of the early 1990s, the international press was driven by all these elements effectively into a consensus to provoke the Western powers to intervene to stop the suffering.
