Postmodemity," he maintains, "begins at the moment that thinkers decide to take seriously the notion that communication is a part of reaUty, that intersubjectivity is something real, and not simply an approximation that isolated consciousnesses appear to achieve because the mechanism of their minds is the same, and Uke causes produce Uke effects. Since Deely is a man who takes communication and mtersubjectivity to be parts of reaUty, he has written his monograph thematicaUy to consider how communication, as a phenomenon and a reaUty in its own right, vindicates common sense against modern ideaUsm.
