DEPOT VISIT: North Pole INTERNATIONAL

For those enthusiasts who used to find their way into a shed by 'nipping around the back', North Pole comes as a sobering reality-check. Gaining entry is like travelling to a foreign country - which in a way it is of course - for anyone who did manage to evade the depot's draconian security system could theoretically stow away under a 'Eurostar' and end up in France or Belgium. Not only is the site protected by a forest of cameras, lights and high-security fences but all visitors have to undergo an airport-style search and body frisk! Mine was conducted in a special booth near the gatehouse, yet, bizarrely, the guards omitted to ask me to open my camera case, inside which could have been any number of knives and guns.
