摘要

There are many who believe the role of Virgin Trains chief executive is something of a poisoned chalice. Prestigious? Yes. High-profile? Yes. Well-paid? Yes - but it's a job bedevilled by setbacks, controversies and almost constant criticism from passengers and media. It would be enough to drive most people insane, but the man who holds the chalice relishes the task and sees every obstacle thrown in his way as a challenge, a new opportunity to move closer to the ultimate goal. Chris Green is that man and one of the reasons he thrives on pressure is that he believes passionately in what he is doing - thanks largely to a lifelong love affair with Britain's railways. In a world of privatisation era whizzkids, Chris is thought of by many as the last of the old-time managers - a real railwayman's man. Much of this is due to the incredible track record he established for himself as one of the brightest stars in the British Rail firmament during the 1980s and early '90s. Indeed, it has been said that he's the best chairman BR never had and that only the privatisation of the industry stopped him going all the way to the top.
