It was BR's Western Region that introduced 125mph to European railways on the grand scale when it launched its accelerated HST services in October 1976. True, France and Germany had been operating specified trains at up to 200km/h (124.3mph), but there were few of them. Back in the 1960s, the Deutsche Bundesbahn was experimenting with high-speed running between Munich and Augsburg; and, in the summer of 1967, the French entered the 200km/h dub - but with just one train daily in either direction. This was 'Le Capitole', named after the city hall and theatre in Toulouse, and leaving Paris Austerlitz at 18.00 each evening. Catering primarily for businessmen, 'Le Capitole' was first class only and was allowed to travel at 200km/h for more than 40 miles between Les Aubrais (Orleans) and Vierzon. With four intermediate stops, the Paris-Toulouse journey time was cut to six hours for the 443 miles.
