CENTRAL LINE TO SUCCESS

London's Central Line has twice hit the headlines for the wrong reasons recently. The Chancery Lane derailment in January 2003 and a similar, though less severe, incident at White City gave the line a glare of publicity it would rather not have. However, all is not what appears on the surface. Once known internally within London Underground as the 'Misery Line', the Central has seen a dramatic turnaround this year and is now among the best performers in the metropolis, putting more trains into service on the route than has been possible at any time in the last 11 years. The reason for much of this success lies with Metronet Rail's Hainault and Ruislip depots - so to find out how such dramatic improvements have been carried out, The Railway Magazine went behind the scenes at Hainault in Essex.
