While the Government continues to complain, quite rightly, about the high cost of the railways, it is also doing its bit to ensure these remain so if the effect would be to transfer cost to other baskets of Government expenditure. British Transport Police are an efficient, specialist and professional team of people whose job is to police the railway. They know the railway and can be relied upon to override the local 'plod' intent on declaring a 'Scene of Crime' in which nothing moves - certainly no trains - for 24 hours or so after a suicide, even where the evidence is undisputed.
