The Great Eastern section of the LNER was famous for the Liverpool Street commuter service - the most intensive steam-worked suburban operation in the world. Modern-day Essex commuters transported back in time to the Liverpool Street of half a century ago would find the terminus largely unrecognisable. But even in 1950 the east side of the station would have been relatively tranquil, with sleek new sliding-door electric trains gliding out every few minutes. For the Shenfield electrification - completed on September 26, 1949 - had transformed services to Ilford, Romford and beyond.
