The 1990s may not have been the heyday of the Manx railway systems, but for enthusiasts, they were undoubtedly a golden era. Adventurous management and a string of anniversaries gelled to produce a series of annual spectaculars that brought visitors flocking to the Isle of Man from the length and breadth of Europe. Kicking off with the 1993 'Year of Railways' to mark the centenary of the Manx Electric Railway's opening between Douglas and Groudle, the islanders staged a remarkable event - they ran a steam locomotive under the wires of the MER between Laxey and Dhoon Quarry.
