The recent announcement that the Heritage Lottery Fund has agreed to a grant of £999,500 to help the Colne Valley & Halstead Railway Trust purchase its entire operation is one of the biggest good news stories in the history of preservation. For a standard gauge heritage line to be offered for sale, lock stock and barrel, is virtually unheard of, even allowing for the ownership transfer of the South Devon Railway in the early-1990s, which took place under rather different circumstances.
