In addition to the three main operators, another passenger franchise operates over parts of the former Southern Region. This is First Capital Connect - formerly known as Thameslink. The origins of the service lie in 1988 when Snow Hill tunnel, between Farringdon and Blackfriars, was re-opened after a 15-year closure to cater for an increasing number of cross-London journeys from north to south. That allowed through services from Bedford and Luton to operate to Croydon, Sutton and Brighton, providing additional capacity to the South Coast and Gatwick Airport without the need to change at a London terminus. BREL built 86 dual-voltage Class 319s for the services.
