Imagine the story of railways told not in words but as an amazing display of locomotives arranged in date order around a 24-road turntable. That's the challenge Barrow Hill Roundhouse chief Mervyn Allcock set himself when he decided to celebrate the bicentenary of steam-hauled passenger trains with the most ambitious event ever staged at the Derbyshire depot. "It was put to me recently that no other site in the country could put on an event quite like this," Mervyn told The Railway Magazine. "We're gathering together what could possibly be the most varied collection of locomotives ever seen together in Britain - from Trevithick's 1808 Catch Me Who Can to a state-of-the-art Class 66 of 2008, along with a representative selection of almost everything in between! No fewer than eight locomotives will be pre-1899.
