Edinburgh's last trams ran in 1956. Now, more than half a century later, Royal Assent has been granted for an all-new network and construction Is to begin this year. The £1.2bn system narrowly survived a review of transport schemes when the SNP took control of the Scottish Executive and so far, only the first phase (1 A) has been approved.
