Network Rail is pressing the Government to show bridge heights in both metric and imperial measurements in a bid to prevent foreign lorry drivers hitting them. Figures from the Department for Transport, which is carrying out a consultation exercise on the proposal, show that more than ten per cent of all bridge bashes are caused by foreign drivers who don't understand feet and inches.
