'Pacer' engine fell out at 60mph

An incident in which the engine -of a Class 142 'Pacer' fell onto the track and derailed the train while it was running at almost 60mph was caused by a fatigue fracture of the crankshaft, an inquiry has found.rnThe extraordinary incident occurred on June 11 near Broad Green, Lanes, while the unit was running at full power on a Blackpool-Liverpool service. The derailed train came to a halt without serious injuries to passengers, but the engine block was left more than 200 yards behind it.
