To listen to comments in messrooms or posted on the Internet, you'd think everyone was an expert on gauging; "Because a given class of steam locomotive used to operate over a certain line in steam days, it should still fit on that route today" is the most common sort of remark.rnBut why should it? The railway has changed out of all proportion since 1968... literally in many locations.rnMaintaining its tradition of taking readers behind the scenes, The RM has therefore decided to look at what is involved in gauging - a look prompted by the refusal of Network Rail to allow GWR 'Castle' No. 5029 Nunnev Castle to go to the Mid-Hants Railway last autumn on a railtour from Tyseley.
