The sudden snowfall over parts of the country on November 22 marooned four members of North Yorkshire Moors Railway staff at Grosmont. With roads out of the village impassable, they had no option but to spend the night at the hostel in Grosmont, created some years ago in what was once the village post office. All managed to get away by around lunchtime on the Sunday. Staff for 'The Moorlander' dining train, due to run the next day, battled their way through to Grosmont early on the Sunday morning via the A169 road from Pickering, which was supposed to be closed. "A remarkable achievement and example of dedication," said NYMR general manager Philip Benham.
