Co-op's Leicester Trams Proposal

With a new satellite eco-town called Pennbury likely to be built south-east of Leicester on land owned by the Co-op, there are initial proposals for a fast bus link to the city centre. But, in a counter-proposal, the Co-op has produced outline plans for a tramway and is prepared to put ￡5million into a feasibility study towards the scheme which, if built, could be extended to other suburban areas. When it comes to rapid transit, Leicester has never shown the initiative of the likes of Nottingham and Sheffield, and the plans have been met by scepticism by local councillors - even though the Co-op is prepared to contribute ￡40m towards the scheme!
