December 12,1988 saw one of the worst train crashes of modern times, resulting in the deaths of 35 people, including the driver of the 06.30 from Bournemouth to Waterloo, which ploughed into the rear of the stationary 07.18 Basingstoke-Waterloo outside Clapham Junction station. The wreckage was then hit by an empty coaching stock train. The direct cause was found to be faulty signalling equipment, but an indirect reason for so many lives being lost was the use of Mk1 coaches.
