Industrial steam echoes around the Welsh valleys

THE Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway produced some magnificent sights and awesome sounds during its September 17-18 Industrial Steam of South Wales-themed autumn gala.This rapidly developing line brought in three visiting locos, all representing industrial steam operations of South Wales in past years. The awesome Maerdy colliery No. 1 Peckett 0-6-0 ST Mardy Monster, from the Elsecar Heritage Railway, produced some memorable contributions as it blasted up the steep slopes of this one-time industrial landscape. Peckett 0-6-0 ST Sir Gomer arrived following overhaul as planned, although it was a shade tight. No sooner had it passed a steam test at its Battlefield Line base than it was loaded on a transporter. Having arrived at the P&BR, it worked its first post-overhaul test train on the afternoon of September 10.
