Former Flying Scotsman owner Marchington dies

DR Tony Marchington, the youngest of three men who have owned A3 No. 4472 Flying Scotsman outright, died in hospital in Buxton on October 16. He was 55. Dr Marchington bought the Gresley Pacific from joint owners Sir William McAlpineand Pete Waterman in 1996 and ran it until selling it in 2003 to the National Railway Museum. Academically gifted and with immense entrepreneurial spirit, Dr Marchington gained his Bachelors and Masters degrees as well as a PhD at Oxford, before joining ICI in 1983 and progressing to become the chemical giant's South American marketing manager. He later jointly founded the bio-tech research company Oxford Molecular and was its chief executive. A prominent freemason, he was made a Freeman of the City of London in 1997.
