Sletwork Rail to take over Borders project

PLANS by the Scottish Government to get the Borders rail link built by a private contractor have been abandoned due to a lack of interest. The contract to reinstate the 35-mile line from Edinburgh toTweedbank had attracted some interest from private contractors. But the withdrawal of bids by two of the three contractors in the running for the contract that could be worth £ 295million has yet again raised serious questions about whether such companies can deliver key rail projects of such magnitude, when the Edinburgh tram debacle is also taken into consideration. Transport Scotland will now work in partnership with Network Rail to complete the project by the December 2014 target date.
