WHY on earth has First Great Western decided to replace the perfectly comfy and serviceable seats on its Class 158s with new ones upon refurbishment? (South West Trains managed to retain and re-cover the existing seats on its 158s and 159s during overhaul.) The FGW ones are by far the most uncomfortable seats I have ever encountered on a long-distance train in the UK in over 40 years of rail travel. I am only 5ft 8in, but I find sitting in these rock-hard seats with their supposed lumbar support and headrests that push your neck forward, sheer purgatory. On a recent journey from Bristol to Hove, I decided to 'bale out' at Southampton to transfer to a slower but much more comfortable Southern Class 377 for the rest of the trip.
