A natural successor to the famous 'Coronation Scot'

So well known is this prestigious West Coast express that many people assume it to have been introduced by the LMS, but in fact it was a product of British Railways' London Midland and Scottish Regions and didn't come into existence until the summer of 1957. The LMS's famous 'Coronation Scot' streamliner (see pXX) was one of the victims of the Second World War - withdrawn at the outbreak of hostilities in 1939 and never reinstated. It was this glaring omission from the Euston timetable that the LMR officials tried to plug with 'The Caledonian', although of course, the fact that the streamlined 'Princess Coronation' Pacifies had all had their air-smoothed casings removed long before 1957 meant that this was never going to be a like-for-like replacement.
