ERTMS goes live but kills Cambrian steam services

The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) finally went live in the early hours of March 28 with the departure of the 04.35 Machynlleth-Aberystwyth Arriva Trains Wales service, formed of a Class 158, writes our chief correspondent. This marked the culmination of several years'development by Network Rail and was originally planned to be implemented more than a year ago. Three days of trial services had commenced on March 23 with shuttles operating between Machynlleth, Aberystwyth and Pwllheli.
