The remarkable rise in the number of heritage lines with a Network Rail link continued this spring with the opening of the Spa Valley and Ecdesbourne Valley railway extensions, the former with a physical connection and the latter with a cross-platform interchange. The Ecclesbourne Valley was featured in our 'All Change at Duffield' article last month (see also news pages 34/35 of this issue), so here we turn the spotlight on its Southern cousin, which has gone a step further than other preserved railways by achieving what no other such line has done so far... sharing a mile of route with main line services, its track running in parallel with the metals used by trains of the Southern train operating company.
