For in a single announcement, Transport Secretary Philip Hammond effectively approved both the HST replacement fleet and the electrification of the Great Western Main Line. The long-awaited Intercity Express Project (IEP) will see a major fleet of 533 'Super Express Train'vehicles ordered by the DfT from the Agility Trains consortium and produced by Japanese trainbuilder Hitachi at a new assembly plant to be built at Newton Aycliffe, in County Durham.
