AN earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Rlchter scale caused a 'tsunami' tidal wave to engulf the north-eastern shore of Japan on March 9, destroying buildings and tossing trains about like toys. This was the scene at Shinchi station, in Fukushima prefecture. Most of the JR East line through Noblru towards Onagawa was destroyed with bridges and tracks ripped and twisted.
