The European Union is slashing its share in the funding of many rail projects because they are not expected to be completed on time. International examples are the Fehmarn road and rail link between Germany and Denmark, upgrading links between Germany and Hungary, and the rehabilitation of the Uzeren Rijn (Antwerpen-Ruhr region). Domestic projects affected include German routes from Aachen to Koeln and Oberhausen and the new high-speed connection to Brussels Zaventem airport.
