Almaty light rail project gets European funding

The European Bank for Reconstruction & Development (EBRD) has signed a memorandum of under-standing with the Kazakh city of Almaty for finance for a 14km (8.7-mile) light rail line, estimated to cost EUR300m. It is expected to progress via a public private partnership, and Czech firm Inekon has been se-lected to supply 34 LRVs. The EBRD has judged that light rail will be faster and cheaper to build than metro.
