New bitumen wagons in traffic

Vtg Rail has delivered the first tranche of new tank wagons for Total Bitumen to work between Linsday oil refinery and Preston. VTG has ordered 30 wagons and 26 have been completed, and have an innovative design that will allow bitumen to be transported more efficiently. The wagons feature a bespoke system of external heating coils, which are more modern in design than the traditional internal heating system. A major benefit of the external system is that it is easier to clean the interior of the tank wagon when required and there is no risk of a steam leak into hot bitumen. A special system of relief valves allows air into the tank on discharge, preventing the creation of a vacuum, which could result in the tank imploding.
