Main line fireman dies on A4 footplate

The steam movement is mourning the loss of fireman Paul Kane, who collapsed and died while firing A4 No. 60019 Bittern on a main line special from York to King's Cross on December 18. Although an ambulance was called to Stevenage station, where the train stopped, Mr Kane was pronounced dead at Stevenage Hospital. An employee of the West Coast Railway Company, he was a former EWS steam driver based at Carlisle and had nearly 60 years of continuous steam experience. He was very highly regarded by his peers for his footplate skills and was always willing to pass on tips and hints to other firemen coming through the ranks.
