Cornwall's Helston Railway Preservation Society has become the surprise winner of the Heritage Railway of the Year Award. Formed as recently as 2006, the newcomer has established a modest presence on the Treverno Estate, comprising a platform, a few buildings and half a mile of track, but it has already attracted 1,000 members and the award's officials felt it typified the pioneering spirit of preservation. The award, sponsored by Ian Allan, was presented by Pete Waterman at a ceremony in London on December 1. The society has the ultimate goal of restoring four miles of the ex-GWR Helston branch as a tourist attraction.
