Mallard's dynamometer car damaged during Railfest

Compounding the £200,000 loss made by the NRM's Railfest event (RM Oct), it has been revealed that the museum is facing a sizeable bill for repairs to North Eastern Railway dynamometer car No. 902502, which was damaged by rainwater during the event, writes Cliff Thomas. The vehicle, dating from 1905 and used to record Mallard's 126mph world steam speed record in 1938, was displayed outdoors during Railfest rather than its normal location inside the museum. Prolonged exposure to severe wet weather during the event has resulted in water damage, principally concentrated in the grained paintwork surface of the exterior panels (applied during restoration work in the 1960s) with some water entering the carriage interior.
