Laser technology could cut third-rail shoe failures

Train failures relating to damaged DC third-rail shoe-gear could be dramatically reduced as a result of a new on-train monitoring system being developed by Southern and Network Rail. Southern says that, in the last 12 months, shoe-gear assembly-related damage caused more than 25,000 delay minutes to its services.
