Broad gauge train ferry re-launched

German Chancellor Angela Merkel - plus the bosses of Deutsche Bahn and Russian Railways - formally re-launched a regular 1,520mm gauge train ferry service from Ust-Luga, near St Petersburg, to Sassnitz-Mukran, on the German Baltic island of Riigen, on June 8. The weekly service uses one of the five ships built for this service, originally introduced during the Cold War in 1986.
