Virgin'Pendolino'tested on East Coast Main Line

History was made on the night of March 12/13 when a nine-car Class 390 'Pendolino'became the.first of the class to run under its own power on the East Coast Main Line. The test run with newly-built set No. 390055 was made ifi the small hours when most other passenger traffic had ceased. The return run was made overnight on March 13/14. The only previous Class 390 on the ECML had been loco-hauled. The runs were facilitated by Network Rail and operator East Coast, with the train running under EC's safety case, but with Virgin driver and EC route conductor. On board the train were staff from EC, Virgin and Alstom to monitor the test.
