It is difficult to grasp just what a profound change railways made to most people's lives as lines began to criss-cross the country nearly two centuries ago. Distant parts of the kingdom became reachable within a day; time was standardised all over Britain; ancient towns became marginalised as new industrial cities acquired status and importance; ordinary folk could for the first time travel easily and cheaply, stretching horizons that had been fixed for millennia.
