Rail poised to shift more West London refuse

West London Waste Authority's choice of a consortium led by SITA UK for a 25-year contract to move waste is expected to benefit the rail industry. The contract is to manage 300,000 tons of household refuse from the London boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond-upon-Thames.The rubbish collected will be transported by trains to a new energy-from-waste facility in Severnside, South Gloucestershire. Sita will take over the rail-linked West London Waste transfer stations at Northolt and Brentford, with the refuse being moved to a £200million incinerator that will be built at Avonmouth. It is expected that there will be fierce bidding from freight companies to haul the material.
