Historic double-decker awaits some loving care

Bulleid-designed double-deck DMBS No. SI 3004S - from EMU set No. 4002 - has seen little progress with conservation or restoration since its handover to the Northamptonshire Ironstone Railway Trust in February 2009 (RM April 2009, p89). This October 13 view shows the rare survivor in open storage at Hunsbury Hill. The trust is aware of its historic importance and rarity; there is only one other surviving 4DDcoach-No.S13003S-which is in even worse condition, at Sellindge, Kent. However, the NIRT has neither the finances nor personnel to see the restoration forward. Anyone who feels they could help with this project in any way, and would like to become involved with restoring an exceptionally rare item of rolling stock that would provide a fascinating experience for 21st century passengers, should contact the NIRT.
