First metal cut for 10000 project

The Ivatt Diesel Recreation Society - working towards the construction of a working replica of No. 10000, the first successful main line diesel loco in the UK -has announced that the first parts have been made. Symbolically, these are the cast cabside numbers, with the individual digits plasma-cut from aluminium plate by Abram Pulman Steel of Sowerby Bridge, and made to the original font-design of Gill Sans as used by the LMS in 1947. There are sufficient numerals to make up 10000 on both sides and both ends (16 zeros), but there are eight'ones', meaning the completed loco could also appear as sister No. 10001. Already acquired is an English Electric 16SVT engine, but LMS 10000 project manager Hanson Haigh said the numerals signalled the start of construction of the loco.
