The Veolia-operated Interconnex service from Leipzig/Berlin to Rostock/Warnemuende will end on December 13. The combination of intense price competition from long-distance coaches, plus increasing track access charges means the service no longer makes money, according to its operator. The road coaches were deregulated and permitted in Germany last year, and do not have to pay road tolls on German motorways. The train service came into operation in 2002 and has been using Traxx electric locos.
