In the September Railway Magazine we estimated that at least 20,000 railwaymen had joined the colours. Last month our figures were raised from 20,000 to 30,000; but on the basis of information which is now becoming available, it appears that 55,000 would be a safe estimate, and it becomes easy to appreciate why the railway companies have had to place a check upon the too-enthusiastic recruiting of their employees in the interests of national transport. Several of the big lines have provided from 6,000 to nearly 10,000 men, the Great Western acknowledging 7,600, the London & North Western upwards of 9,400, Midland 6,700, North Eastern 5,000, Underground combination 4,500, and on several other lines figures are well over 2,000.
