Passenger services in eastern Canada to close

Two different passenger services in the east of Canada are facing closure. The reasons include a mixture of low patronage, high costs, and in one case the proposed closure of part of the route by the freight railroad that owns the tracks. Services on the Algoma Central Railway from Sault Ste Marie, near the eastern side of Lake Superior, north to Hearst -a French-Canadian community in northern Ontario - opened fully in 1914 and very nearly closed in 2014. The line crosses both the Canadian Pacific-and Canadian National-operated trans-continental routes, and was the first railway in Canada to replace steam locos in 1952.
