RAIB probes double'Spad'at Greenford

A serious incident in which a passenger train passed two signals at danger and travelled 1(3/4) miles before being stopped is being probed by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch. The incident occurred on March 20 and involved the 11.36 Chiltern Railways service from Paddington to West Ruislip. A freight train had passed the junction at Greenford shortly before and because it was still occupying the line between Greenford and South Ruislip, the signaller at Greenford kept the signal protecting the junction at danger. The Chiltern unit, travelling at around 20mph, passed that signal and a second one at danger 142 yards further on. It was only stopped by an emergency message from Marylebone control after a local message had failed.
