This is an expanded and revised second edition of a book first published in 2005. The main additions are spot-colour and a remarkable set of line drawings for virtually every class of BR steam loco. The drawings were discovered by the author while he was researching the text side of the book at the National Archives in Kew and each one now forms a sort of chapter heading for every class and sub-class entry. They have taken the place of most of the black & white photos in the first volume, but as the main purpose of the book is to convey loco building, renumbering and disposal details, this is not a problem.
