Mention the name Clayton to any British diesel locomotive enthusiast and an immediate mental picture of a Class 17 Bo-Bo will spring to mind. Those well-proportioned centre-cab diesel-electrics were very much part of the British Railways modernisation of the early 1960s, especially in Scotland and northern England, where the 117 class members were largely based. The fleet didn't enjoy particularly long lives - but then nor did many pilot scheme types ordered by BR in its headlong rush to rid itself of steam traction. The Class 47 Type 4 Co-Co was a much longer-lived machine and Clayton produced some of those for export... as well as building most of BR's British Thomson Houston-designed Class 15s.
