Rail journeys hit new record... but coal traffic is'falling off a cliff'

Passenger journeys on franchised services have reached a new record, according to Office of Rail & Road figures. In 2014/5,1.654billion journeys were recorded, the highest figure since recording began in 2002/3. The rise since 2013/4 is 67.3million journeys, or 4.2%, but the figure soars to 70% when compared with the total in 2002/3 - 975million. In every sector recorded by the ORR - London & South East, regional, long-distance and open access -there were rises.
