Ashburton project support forces National Park rethink

After weeks of uncertainty, the proposed building development on the site of Ashburton station in Devon has been temporarily postponed. Fresh proposals by the Friends of Ashburton Station (FoAB) for an out-stationed museum at the former Great Western branch line terminus and a bid to eventually rebuild the missing three miles from Buckfastleigh has enforced a rethink of Dartmoor National Park Authority's housing and retail development plans at Chuley Road. More than 2, 153 people signed a petition to protect the original trainshed - currently in use as a commercial garage - from demolition and/or unsympathetic alteration, which has been strongly backed by the South Devon Railway's Association andTrust.The DNPA's planning consultation ended on December 12, having generated worldwide attention and the support of organisations such as the Transport Trust and the Heritage Railway Association as well as Ashburton Town Council.
