CHRIS Grayling's decision to halt electrification projects on the Midland Main Line, in the North West and on the GW, must be one of the most short-sighted changes the railways have experienced for years. It is very easy to say, since bi-mode trains now work effectively, you don't need wires everywhere. That is certainly true, if one accepts a reduced performance and you don't worry about emissions from diesels because that is a problem for the DEFRA.
